I'm always getting asked if you can do transfers onto our metal...and...the answer is "heck yes." They work great and are easy to do. We show you how to do this on today's TTV.
Does this mean that I'll never be asked this question again? "Heck no." I'll still be asked how to do this technique. Seriously, this is very easy to do using Ranger's Mat Medium. So, if you don't have this stuff, get some because you can't call yourself an artist unless you have mat medium. Don't worry you don't have to use it, you just have to own it to be called an artist.
This sample shows our Dijon metal with a transfer in the middle and as you can see they really do turn out quite nice.
But, then I took this a step further and added to one of the canvas boards I always have "at the ready" which means painted and ready to be completed. So this turned into....
this! Tear up some paper, add some more mat medium, stick it all together and you've got a finished piece.
This is one of the pieces we will be giving away for this week's blog posting.
This shows closeups of the other pieces that Megan did on the video. Adding Ranger's Glossy Accents to the top after they are dried really gives a nice finished coating to the entire piece.
so, I took the middle piece and mounted it to mat board and wrapped it then attached it to one of my other canvas pieces that I also have at the ready.
and this is what it became floated on the back of the canvas. Remember, I don't think there's a front or back to canvas. Add some large tacks and I think you have a nice finished piece.
This will become the second piece we will be giving away for this week's posting.
Yes, that's right there are two giveaways this week. I'll pick two winners on Friday evening.
All of you have been great about giving us your tips and sharing your pieces that you've been doing and we love seeing what you're creating.
We had quite a few questions about Vivian's flowers from last week's postings and how it was done. These are Vivian's own words in her email.
I call it my Crazy Quick Carnation. I only took about 10 minutes to make.
Four circles, different sizes cut with the funny scissors, squish each one like cupcake papers and stack them inside each other.
Hope you like it.
Vivian
I guess I'm not an artist yet, but will be soon! Ranger, here I come...
I love the transfers and will be trying that technique!

Hot damn! (sorry bout that!) I use Claudine's matte medium just about every day on something....I have three jars of it around here...and I've done that transfer method tons of times on paper but WOW! never would have thought to try it on metal...another world opened up to me. Love the results and will be trying that in the future. FYI...I bought your "A to Z of Metalworks" DVD and laughed hysterically throughout. Why? you may ask? Because you and Megan were so dang polite to each other! It cracked me up after watching TT every week.

This opens up a whole new world of possibilities...now I know why I had to buy that matte gel medium for my stash. Thanks for the ideas.

Have my metal, have my matte, need to find the perfect picture to transfer. You two HAVE to be related to each other - very intriguing to watch your interactions!!

looks like transfers to metal may be easier than on other mixed media pieces. at least it looks easy when you do it. thinking of using the method to make some metal birthday cards/plaques on chipboard. i have some seriously weird pics that would look cool inside embossed metal frames. need to get some of those honking big tacks like on the red frame too. really like those.

I can't believe I didn't own mat medium! I'll be ordering some soon so I can try out this awesome technique. Another great video and another super project to try.

Oh, I just love this canvas collagey piece. So 'worldly' as Megan put it. Love how the final projects turned out. I have really been getting 'into' collage and mixed media and have been wanting to try my hand at a transfer technique so this video is very timely for me. Need to get me some Matte Medium so I can offically dawn myself an artist ;)
Have fun at Inspired---wish I could be there!

This is THE MOST COOL technique. I not only get to learn great new things but just laugh and laugh at your videos. I've now managed to get matte multi medium all over the computer keyboard, but hey, maybe I'll just do some image transfers on it.

Great idea. I love image transfers, save tons of magazine photos to do just that. But had never thought to do it on metal that is the best. No damage to the surface from the paper removal. Love love love it. Thank you for sharing. Can't wait to see what else Megan brought back in ideas from Ranger U. Ps. LOVE the metal carnation!!! That is my favorite one of all. Way to go Vivian.

fabulous it is. Your metal transfer and
lovely and I like the antiquity look they
have! Many thanks for teaching me and making
me smile. I would love to win one of your creations to show to all my friends...

Oh, I really like this technique! You're such enablers - I am going to have to go out and get that stuff and start tranferring. I have an idea......
Posted by: Monica Lore | May 12, 2010 at 12:15 PM
Love transfers, but it never occurred to me to take it to metal. Like "DUHHH" of course it turned out beautiful. One thing that I did not hear you mention is that ink jet prints don't react well with matte medium, even Claudine's really wonderful products.

This is totally awesome. I'm so glad you gals are out there trying new stuff and then sharing it with us. And I loved last week's...putting the "petal to the metal"!!
Posted by: Cee | May 12, 2010 at 01:02 PM
LOVE that carnation!!1
Posted by: Marilyn | May 12, 2010 at 01:06 PM
I love doing image transfers. I do & teach them frequently using both Inkjet & laser images. I don't recall Megan stating this, but with this method, you need to use a NON-INK JET print. It would just bleed. ANYWAY, great idea to show. WOuld look great coated with Crackle accents. It can also be coated directly with matte medium to seal.
No I am NOT trying to be bossy....
Looks awsome on the metal!
Posted by: Jan Hoefler | May 12, 2010 at 01:16 PM
LOVE the transfer technique!! What a great way to add even more dimension!
Thanks for the idea!!

wow, wow wow, love it.Need to go shopping i do.......yes.
Posted by: Karen Keiper | May 12, 2010 at 03:31 PM
I have always wanted to do transfers, but it seemed that one needed to use a special printer to do them.
Now, wow! How simple. I have all this metal here waiting to have transfers on it!
Can't thank you girls enough for showing us this trick. Now I just need some of the goop stuff you used ;-)

I haven't had the time this week see the TTV but it's on my list to do later. I definitely don't want to miss this one! Actually, I've seen them all so why miss one now! You guys rock!
Posted by: Katina | May 12, 2010 at 04:29 PM
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOO....gotta give this one a try!!! I haven't done tranfers in quite a while and this week's Taco Tuesday video MAKES me want to pull out my collage-y crap...er...I mean...stuff...LOL!!!

Love this technique of transfering onto metal
cant wait to try it
Posted by: Libby | May 12, 2010 at 05:33 PM
So glad to know Megan learned something at Ranger U. Still watching for the video or pics. The project is awesome and I have a picture I have been wanting to use for a gift to give my sister. Will it work on a print from my printer? If so this will be perfect as I didn't want it to look like I just cut out a piece of paper, but I loved the image. If it works I'll send a picture. We need more Tuesdays in a week as I look forward to the TT every week. Love you girls!

This is a great thing! I haven't watched the video yet (I let it download so it doesn't have to stop to buffer, yeah I know, get to your point) but I am in a transfer making mode in my crafting. I've learned to transfer to polymer clay and now metal. What will they think of next? By the Way, I am an artist because I do own matte medium -- I bought it for last year's Inspired. Now I am in Concord waiting for this year's Inspired. A useless piece of info that I am sure you could care less about but Cheryl was the first person I saw last year when I got to the hotel and this year when I walked in the door there she was hitting the blackberry with a couple of other women!
Posted by: laurie hunt | May 12, 2010 at 07:27 PM
cool new way to transfer. Thanks!
Posted by: Stephanie | May 13, 2010 at 10:22 AM
You guys could make a video about watching paint dry and I bet it would be hilarious. That we get great techniques along with the entertainment is icing on the cake!!

AWESOME (as ususal) Ladies! Hmmmmmmm what a great centerpiece that would make for a 12x12 canvas with a niche...too bad I don't have a blank one, do you know where I might find one? :)
Thanks for keeping the videos coming - they are a hoot and very inspiring!
